JAMES CORNELL

CHARITY

Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth. So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that were 'reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy.'

- Neil deGrasse Tyson

From what I have learned, the planet is in a much different condition than it was years ago.  I believe it is the duty of my generation to strive to fix the problems of the earth. I believe everyone should have empathy for the world, for living things and to give a part of themselves to help others. I have been volunteering every weekend for a cat rescue organization in Jersey City that feeds and cares for the stray cats and conducts trap and release in order to keep the cat population down and safe.  I have learned a lot about this urban ecosystem of cats, people and wildlife in the city. Humans have altered the natural order of things and we need to take responsibility to care for all the living things we affect. I really enjoy helping the cat rescue group and hope to volunteer at the animal shelter once I’m 16.
